Paul and I went to work yesterday morning and Kai was fine, same as always lately. Brandon (our roommate) goes to let him out mid day for a potty break and Kai is holding his leg up and in pain, much like he was before surgery, but much more so on how dramatically he’s lifting the leg and how much he’s wincing in pain.

We already had an appointment for this morning with the surgeon to x-ray and remove stitches, but I called the Dr anyway to see if it’d be smart to bring him in to the emergency services staff that night. He advised that it’d really be best to save our money and wait until our appointment that was first thing in the morning.

Kai isn’t doing any better this morning, but when trying to figure out what hurt him, it was putting light pressure on his inside leg muscle. I could put my hands on the hip, and outside of his leg and get no response from him. The instant I go to run my hand lightly down the inside of his leg he’s crying. So I’m hopeful that it’s just a pulled muscle.

They do his x-rays and lo-and-behold, he somehow popped the hip out of the new socket. Our guess is he went to move around in the crate yesterday morning at some point and slipped and fell on it knocking the hip towards the INSIDE, complete opposite of how he’d popped it out prior to surgery with the dysplasia.

After tearful discussion with Paul this morning, we’ve decided to have the vet go in and try and fix this. They’ll either just put it back in place, or they’ll replace the cup with a larger version to try and hold that ball joint better. They won’t know which until they are in there. Thankfully I’m only paying for the anesthesia and hospital stay for this attempt.

If this doesn’t work, then I can’t bring myself to put him through anything else further. It’s unfair to him being so young and never feeling good. I am hoping beyond hope that with more modifications to his crate to not allow any chance of slipping, that we’ll get through this attempt without a hitch.

Oiy..I love this boy more than anything. I hate that he’s got to go through all this, but the goal is that he’ll be healthy and pain free for many many years after.

UPDATE:

I’ve gotten a little more information from the vet as Paul was the one that took Kai in this morning.

Before Kai’s THR, his femur was popped out and up from his hip joint. So when they went in to put the implants, they made it so the likelihood of it popping out that way again was unlikely. However, there is the chance that he could do something that would pop it out and under, but they place it in such a way that they try to reduce all odds of this happening.

For Kai, whatever he did, he managed to get it to do that, pop out and under (opposite of how it was pre-surgery the first time). He may have just moved the right way when getting up, he may have slipped on it, we don’t really know.

He will go in for surgery today, and no matter whether they replace the cup part of the joint or not, they will be repositioning it to hopefully avoid either ways of it popping out again.

His recovery time will be no different than what it already was, and it wont require anything additional than we were already diligently doing. It’s a risk of the surgery during healing, and placement.

I plan to ask for a sedative as well as the tranqualizers for this poor guy to have during the first 2 weeks of recovery. Whatever it takes to keep him as low key as I possibly can (even more so than he already was) so we can make it through this crucial period and hopefully avoid it happening again.

I have been just a ball full of energy this weekend. I think I might be driving Mom nuts. I just want to play and run around with Titus so badly! And to think, I’m only 2 weeks in on this crazy 8 weeks no fun for Kai journey… I’m trying really hard to be good and listen too, but when you’ve got so much pent up energy, it’s soooooo hard to listen! Mom and I are working on that though. Titus is also trying to teach me this silly thing called “Speak.” I don’t get it, I just want the treat….

Anyways! Here’s more of purty me!

Today I’ve had LOTS o’ energy! I was also able to lay on my surgery hip with a good padding of blanket under me, it was comfy! I’m such a pretty boy, but I was begging to get out of jail!

I had to have my right hip replaced. This is the night I got to come home. I’m very zoned out on pain medication and a tranquilizer to let me get some much needed calm rest! Oh, and that STUPID cone thing, it’s go to go!

Silly bandage! Look, they left the hair on my foot though!
